If your a betting man and you watch the Melbourne cup, throw your ticket away if you see your horses name in the first 1000 meters. If you betting on a BJ Penn fight and there is some one good enough to beat him for more than 40 seconds, do the same. Matt Hughes however on this nite was not, whoever told him circle to into the right hand on the inside with your shoulder down after a jab, doesn't know anything about boxing. For the record moving around on your feet does not actually mean you have good footwork. Fortunately for BJ Penn this isn't a horse race, front runners often come good and its very possible to win a fight early and or stay in front.
Rampage vs Machida
This could have been an easy fight for Rampage. I believe he could have knocked Machida out without to much trouble. As it is rampage did not beat Machida the first two rounds Shogun did, Machida, still gun shy from his Ko loss, was rightfully hesitant to trade with Jackson. Rampages mindset was good and is probably the only thing that won him the fight, the pressure was constant but intelligent and he didn't go to sleep at any stage despite being very frustrated and tired from his foiled efforts.
Rampage to his credit tried to avoid leg kicks and successfully cut the ring off. I believe he would have had an easier night if he would have had a few more subtle moves. Namely a lazy jab, a shuffle or slide step to move in, change his levels on the way in as Machida brought every feint early, a counter inside thigh kick, limiting the southpaw body and head kicks and tripping Machida up.
